Squish Squash

March 23rd, 2006

Off to play Squash this weekend - after a long time away from the sport we’ll go for a hit and see how much we’ve forgotten.

The court’s been booked, and at £3.30 per person for an hours entertainment it’s not a bad price at all.
This will prove just how unfit we are, and might just have to go for a pint to recover afterwards.

Blog updates

March 22nd, 2006

You’ll notice to the right there are now a few more links. I’ve added a few blogs that I visit regularly (or wish to keep reading) and a cd of the week (thats being sampled on the iPod). I checked my Top25 tracks today and scarily all were Jack Johnson tracks.

Of course this doesn’t take into account podcasts as they are all individually labelled, otherwise these would feature, as I listen to a podcast every day on the way to or from work (approx an hour each way)

I always look forward to the podcasts being updated and my favourites are now weekly and bi-weekly. No more 4 week waits! - woohoo

Whats the weather like in Hawaii?

March 21st, 2006

Well, I was curious so we called to find out…

Actually, we had to call to make a purchase and got outstanding service (as expected). The item should arrive in the next 7-10 days.

We’re on the hunt for an alternative calling card to Alpha as their rates aren’t as competitive as they once were.
We used to get free calling from mobiles, but now it’s 3p/min to NZ. Extortion!

Will keep looking around and seeing what else is out there.

When an idea is a non-starter

March 20th, 2006

Take for example the crazy idea of buying a misspelled domain name in the hope of securing viable traffic to your site and selling a product or service to them.

It might work in some cases, but not where it is limited to 0.23% of the searched words in a search for the correct word.

This is akin to throwing money down the drain (however small the amount is)
I’ve got big pockets if it’s being dished out so easily!

My creative streak

March 19th, 2006

Often chided for not showing prowess in the kitchen I sought to make amends today.

I’m known for being able to whip up a meal for 10 or more people but often get the timing wrong when cooking for 2 or 3 (unless it is a bbq and it is spot on every time).

I spent time with my wife baking today. Nothing fancy, just a batch of bikkies, and then was the task of decoration.
My finished product is shown below.

Biccies

The recipe used;

Iced Biccies

These are the little petit fours that your granny used to make and are guaranteed to make the mealiest mouth water.

Ingredients

* 250g Plain flour
* 125g Butter
* 125g Brown sugar
* 1 Egg (beaten)
* 2tsps Mixed spices or cinnamon
* Pinch of salt
* 125g Icing sugar
* 2tbsp Warm water
* Food colouring
* Cakes decorations (100s and 1000s, etc)

Method

1. Set the oven to gas mark 5/190°.
2. Grease two baking trays.
3. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl and add the beaten egg bit by bit. Put the flour, salt and spice into a sieve, and add to the butter, sugar and egg mixture. Mix it altogether until it makes a dough.
4. Dust a board lightly with flour and dust your rolling pin. Roll out the dough to a thickness of half a centimetre. Then using cutters or a knife, make some shapes.
5. Put the biscuit shapes on the greased tray, and bake on a high shelf in the oven for 15 minutes (depending on your oven).
6. Take the biscuits out of the oven and put them on a wire rack until they are cool.
7. Make up the icing with the icing sugar and water, adding the water drip by drip so it’s not runny. Add food colouring to the icing if you like, then ice the biscuits. Once the icing starts to set, bung on the decorations (candy balls, jelly diamonds, chocolate strands).

My easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy rating - 5 out of 5

Green Wing returns

March 19th, 2006

… back to our screens on 31 March.

This program is a riot, and has us in stitches. Hopefully this season will be as funny as the last.
Caroline (Tamsin Greig) has the best part, and seems to have done well for herself off-screen as well.

3 fans in our house will be tuning in every week.

(belated) Birthday wishes to us!

March 18th, 2006

I totally forgot that we turned 1 on 07 March 2006.
This was a great achievement, as many people give up blogging after days (let alone weeks and months)
With 319 blog posts acrhived we are short of our ‘blog a day’ target but this coming year will be looking to rectify this.

Do you like whats posted here?
If so then you may also like RcHeli.info and Inzvestor.com for a mix of leisure and business discussions.

Special thanks to those of you who read my blog daily (including my mum)
I’d like to reward my regular readers with links to their blogs - so email me with your blog address and I’ll point people your way too.

Thanks to all who have made the first year possible.

Twiglets - should I be using this word too?

March 17th, 2006

Reading Metro today I came across this word half a dozen (or so) times.

It seems that every gossip columnist is using this word and it is making it’s way into the mainstream.
Should I adopt it’s use or will there be a new buzzword in 24 hours time to knock this off its spot?

Duck, Duck, Read my Bum!

March 17th, 2006

What a classic quote (from the latest Sky TV advert) and a very cool use of animation.
This broadly appeals to my sense of humour and I nearly fell off my chair laughing when I saw it (and then again the second time)

I hope this gets nominated for some kind of award.

If it doesn’t (really?) then I hereby announce it the winner of the March 2006 Inzvestor Advertising Award.

Call me to claim your prize.

Was Stonehenge the world’s first traffic island?

March 16th, 2006

We’re off to Stonehenge at Easter (day not yet decided) but saw an article on the telly tonight about the proximity of the A303 and other main roads to the ancient stones. It has kind of put us off going, as I had imagined the view would be open countryside (like you see on the postcards). But we’re all for a day out and as long as the crowds are not too big or the weather too dreary then I am sure we will join the queue of people pondering how these huge stones made their way into a circle some 5000+ years ago.
